There will be no sight of Tiger Woods at the Quail Hollow Championship this weekend in Charlotte, as the struggling star failed to make the cut for the eighth time in his illustrious career.
Woods shot a 1-over 73 Thursday for a two-day total of even par, which was not enough to qualify for weekend play. He needed a collapse by the several players in front of him, which did not happen.
Known for its difficult greens, Quail Hollow exposed Woods’ putting struggles. He had 33 putts on Thursday, which just will not get it done. Quail Hollow is the first course he’s twice failed to make the cut. Woods last missed the cut at the 2011 PGA Championship in Atlanta.
“It’s frustration,” he said after his round. “I’m not playing a weekend where I have a chance to compete for a title. I’ve missed my share of cuts in the past, and none of them feel good.”
Missing out on the weekend is yet another setback for Woods, who remains on the comeback trail. Now some five years removed from his last major championship, Woods’ inconsistency continues to be one of golf’s biggest stories.
The next opportunity to turn around his results is The Players Championship next weekend at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Verda Beach, Florida.
