Disney’s and Marvel’s Avengers has now accumulated $178.4 million in revenue since opening in 39 overseas territories on Wednesday. This means that the comic book film has outperformed almost everything playing in U.S. theaters this weekend combined.
The Avengers broke weekend records everywhere from Taiwan to Argentina to New Zealand. The movie made its biggest killing in the UK, where it raked in $24.7 million, and counting.
What is even more astounding about The Avengers’ humongous international haul, is that it hasn’t yet played in the theaters of mega-markets like China, Japan, Russia, and of course the U.S.
Right now The Avengers would fall in third place if we compared its international earnings with the biggest box office hits of 2012, such as The Lorax, 21 Jump Street, and The Hunger Games.
Although international excitement surrounding the film may have peaked the anticipation level of U.S. moviegoers, unfortunately they will have to wait until next weekend to enjoy The Avengers.
