Audiences around the world now have a date to when they will be able to see Angelina Jolie play a wicked villain in Disney’s Maleficent. The film, which is a twist on Sleeping Beauty, has finally set a release date.
Walt Disney Studios has announced that Maleficent is due to hit theaters on March 14, 2014.
Perhaps it is a strategic move! Another movie slated to open on March 14, 2014 is DreamWorks Animation’s Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Also, Invertigo, a Sony sci-fi thriller, will open on March 7, 2014. Walt Disney could be using these other dates to help with the buzz of Maleficent.
Maleficent is a re-imagining of Sleeping Beauty. The movie focuses on Jolie’s character, who puts a curse on Princess Aurora to die on her 16th birthday. Another sorceress casts a spell on Sleeping Beauty that puts her to sleep instead, and she can only awaken by the kiss of a prince (WGTR).
According to the studio, “the live-action film explores the origins of the evil fairy Maleficent and what led her to curse Princess Aurora in Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty.”
Maleficent will start shooting this June in London.
