Is Serena Williams planning on leaving the tennis word? Well…not just yet, but she certainly doesn’t view it with the same zeal she may have years earlier. 13-time Grand Slam titles later Serena admits that she’s not overly enthused about her sport.
Shocking I know. But according to TennisNow.com, Williams stated in an interview after her first round win against South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers at the Brisbane International that although she doesn’t love it as much as she use to, she still needs it, so she doesn’t plan on going anywhere for now.
“I mean, I don’t love tennis today, but I’m here, and I can’t live without it … so I’m still here and I don’t want to go anywhere any time soon.”
Serena continued with an even more puzzling admission that she actually never was a fan of sports.
“It’s not that I’ve fallen out of love; I’ve actually never liked sports, and I never understood how I became an athlete. I don’t like working out; I don’t like anything that has to do with working physically.”
So what do you think the 30 year old power hitter rather be doing at the moment? Shopping of course!
“If it involves sitting down or shopping, I’m excellent at it,” she admitted along with other interest such as school, a budding fashion line, producing and even acting. I just want to be able to do the other things that I’m doing and expand on that. I think that helps keep my motivation up.”
She continued;
“I’m doing a lot of producing. I’m still working on my acting, but more on production and writing. Gosh, what else am I doing? I’m in school, and there’s something else that I can’t remember — I’m doing so many things.”
Williams also admitted that in a way she has always been preparing for life after tennis.
“I just want to be able to do other things I am doing and expand on that — I think that will help keep my motivation up (in tennis). I have always been preparing myself for life after tennis.”
The Australian Open where Serena has won five of her thirteen titles begins on January 16th. After a crushing defeat at the US Open against Samantha Stosur Serena has some making up to do and while she doesn’t like Tennis she does like to win.
