Kerry Washington Grabs Lead Role In Shonda Rhimes 'Scandal' – Trailer

Actress Kerry Washington is coming to TV! The ‘Ray’ actress will star in ‘Scandal’ premiering on ABC in 2012. The series creator is Shonda Rhimes, creator and executive producer of ABC’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Private Practice’.

‘Scandal’ is described as a crisis management firm with a group of lawyers who double as PR execs to turn around explosive celebrity situations into positive ones – can we say Charlie Sheen!

Kerry Washington takes the lead role as Olivia Pope, the head of the firm.

The show is loosely based on the life of Judy Smith who founded a crisis management and has been in the business for 25 years. Smith serves as an executive producer.

Kerry stated she wasn’t looking for a TV role but couldn’t resist the script:

“I was not looking to do a TV show, but I read this amazing script with this amazing woman named Olivia Pope, and it happened to be for TV and so I thought maybe I want to do something different,” Washington said. “Once I read it, I wanted to do whatever I had to do to be a part of it.”

Rhimes expressed the importance of having Kerry in the lead role

“You know, we’re talking about a black female lead of a television show, and we wanted to make sure we had just the right person.” “Kerry came in and she was just perfect.”
