No.1 seed Caroline Wozniacki and no. 28 Serena Williams are working hard to set up an epic semi-final battle that will likely decide the winner of the 2011 US Open Grand Slam. Wozniacki needed 3 hours and 2 minutes to defeat Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-1. After playing strong for most of the first set it appeared that Wozniacki had lost it – even given up.
“I was basically out of the tournament at one point,” Wozniacki said. But down a set and 4-1 in the second set Caroline turned it back up!
“OK, I can do this. I can still fight back,” she said to herself.
She added, “I know that I’m in good shape. I can play out there for five hours if I have to.” It wasn’t quite five hours but by the time the third set began Kuznetsova was out of it.
Earlier in the day the conversation surrounded around Serena’s alleged intimidation tactics. During her 4th round match with Ana Ivanovic of Serbia which she won 6-3, 6-4, Serena approached the net and shouted her signature “Come On!!!” After the match she was asked if she tries to intimidate “No, I don’t try. I just am.”
Ivanovic had more guts that John McEnroe who stated he was “scared” after the shout, Ivanovic on the other hand had a different view from the court. On whether the shouts bothered her,
“Not at all; I mean, I was screaming some ‘Come ons’.”
If Serena can defeat no. 17 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Caroline Wozniacki can defeat No. 10 Andrea Petkovic – then the semi-final match up is on!
Serena will bring her serve which she knows is one of her most valuable weapon,
“I just have confidence in it. It’s a weapon,” said Williams. “I’m just like, ‘OK, I’m going to hit an ace here.’ I hit an ace.”’
Wozniacki will bring her fighting spirit – Who will make it to the finals – Wozniacki or Williams?
