Aaliyah 10 Years Later: Gone But Not Forgotten

Former singer/songwriter Dana Haughton better known as Aaliyah, died in a plane crash over the Bahamas while filming a music video for her hit single Rock the Boat.   Aaliyah’s untimely death at the age of 22, which sent waves through the hip-hop and R&B community, is being remembered this evening on BET.

According to the Washington Post, BET will air “Aaliyah: One in a Million,” a one hour special featuring interviews from the late star’s friends and family, tonight at 8 p.m. The tribute will highlight Aaliyah’s (albeit short) largely successful career in music and film which paved the way for today’s superstars like Rihanna and Ciara.   Aaliyah not only sold millions of records with albums such as Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, and One in a Million; she also starred in popular movies such as Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned.

The Brooklyn born, Detroit raised, singer who was affectionately referred to as “baby girl” by close friends such as Missy Elliott, was not only humorous and lighthearted, but also very much the perfectionist.   MTV located archived interviews they conducted with the songstress where she made the following statement reiterating that very point.

“I’m a bit of a perfectionist and I’m also a bit of a workaholic and I want everything to be perfect.”

Twitter followers took to the boards expressing their love for the fallen star;

“Today we celebrate the life & legacy of Aaliyah.   I can’t believe it’s been 10 years.   Ur music will still live on. RIP Baby Girl.”

Aaliyah is still ranked by Billboard magazine as the 10th most successful female R&B artist of the past 25 years. Although her life was short, her successes were immense as she continues to live on in the hearts of her fans and the music she left behind.
