The English news publication The Sun reported earlier this week that Idris Elba overturned his vehicle in Finland. The 41-year-old star was behind the wheel when his car lost contact with a gravel road during the filming of a racing documentary for BBC2.
Although he escaped injury, the moment the wheels flew off the roadway is emblazoned in his mind. “I never want to do that again. It’s the first time that I have ever rolled a car,” he told The Sun.
Elba recalls the event in shocking detail. It wasn’t until he went over an embankment that he realized how dire the situation was and he still can’t believe it happened.
“I wasn’t going fast, the car just had a mind of its own when it hit the bank,” he said. “I cut the corner and then we rolled. Suddenly it all came together.”
The documentary moved forward with production.
In the interview, Idris discusses his lifetime love for fast driving, and recalled how he bought his first car illegally at age 14 – a move he got away with because he looked years older.
“It was a Mini Clubman. To buy a car at 14, you must have facial hair because when you have facial hair at 14 people don’t ask your age! I’m not proud of it, but for me, it’s where it all began,” he says.
Elba’s fans may not be the only ones relieved that he survived the accident. Recently Elba confirmed on Oprah’s Next Chapter that he and his girlfriend are expecting a child.
Idris Elba: King of Speed is scheduled to air Dec. 26 and 27 in the U.K.
