Idris Elba Dishes on His Health and Obama; Won’t Confirm Girlfriend’s Pregnancy Rumors

Idris Elba misses press conference for Mandela biopic due to asthma attackActor Idris Elba has had a full recovery since his asthma attack and dished on how honored he was to present the Nelson Mandela biopic to President Barack Obama. Meanwhile, Elba still won’t confirm whether or not his makeup artist girlfriend of several months is pregnant.

Idris gave his fans quite the scare when he couldn’t make it to a South African press conference because he suffered from an asthma attack shortly after boarding his plane.

The good news is the British actor has made a full recovery and says that his asthma attacks are a rare occurrence.

“I’m feeling really good,” Idris told the Huffington Post. “Full recovery… I’ve battled with asthma most of my life, and think as soon as I got on that plane I just got an attack, which is really rare.”

The “Luther” actor admitted that it was also “a very scary moment” for him, but he is grateful that he’s feeling much better now.

He also revealed how grateful he was to now have a connection not only with former South African President Mandela, but with U.S. President Barack Obama, as well.

Idris had the honor of presenting the film to the president at the White House.

“That was such a great moment for me to have the opportunity to present that film to the president,” he said. “The president has oftentimes spoke very, very highly of Mr. Mandela and regards him as a friend and speaks of him fondly. So I felt very proud to play the character and be able to present it to Barack, who loves to watch films.”

In the past, Obama has also listed Elba as one of his favorite actors.

The heart throb actor also revealed his top three favorite female co-stars of all time, but there is only one woman who has his heart now… and rumor has it she may be having his baby as well.

Idris recently went public with his relationship, which he has kept under wraps for about seven months.

Idris grinned from ear to ear as he posed with his girlfriend, Naiyana Garth, who is a London-based hair stylist and makeup artist.

While she may be a new face to many of the 41-year-old actor’s fans, sources revealed that she’s been a part of his life for quite some time.

“They’ve been together for a few months but it’s really ramped up recently,” one source told The Sun. “They get on brilliantly and she’s a real hit with his family and friends.”

Idris himself hasn’t confirmed the pregnancy rumors, but once source has already said that the couple are “thrilled” to be having a baby together.

Idris is already the father to an adorable 11-year-old girl named Isan from his previous marriage to Dormowa Sherman. But news of another baby on the way may be what prompted him to finally go public with this relationship.

Independent journalism doesn't fund itself.

We hope this story was worth your time. For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed Black-owned and independently run. We didn't get here by waiting on ad budgets that were never built to prioritize us. Our readers did that.

Corporate support for Black media has always been thin. Outlets like ours get roughly 1% of the $170 billion spent on U.S. advertising each year, and that margin is shrinking further as advertisers walk back the DEI-linked commitments they made in 2020. That's the backdrop. It's not why we're asking.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
