Cannes Film Festival Selects 'The Great Gatsby' For Opener

The 2013 Cannes film festival begins May 15 and lasts through to the 26th and festival organizers are looking to kickoff things right by enlisting Leonardo Dicaprio’s The Great Gatsby to open up the festivities.

“It is a great honor for all those who have worked on The Great Gatsby to open the Cannes Film Festival,” the director said in a statement. “We are thrilled to return to a country, place and festival that has always been so close to our hearts, not only because my first film Strictly Ballroom was screened there 21 years ago, but also because F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside Saint-Raphaël.”

Warner Bros. originally intended to debut the film this past December, but decided to push it back due to stiff competition during the holiday season. It appears the studios decision has worked out in their favor, now that The Great Gatsby will be getting a prestigious premiere at the film festival.

For some reason, the movie will only show in 3D at the festival this year. I just went back to look at the trailer, and one thing is for sure; this film doesn’t need the 3D treatment. See for yourself in the trailer below. In any case, it shall be fun to see Baz Luhrmann’s take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tale.

Located in Cannes, France, Cannes is one of the world’s most publicized film festivals. It was created to draw attention to and raise the profile of films with the aim of contributing towards the development of cinema, and boosting the film industry worldwide.
