Andy Reid did not make it work with Michael Vick in Philadelphia, but it appears he will get another opportunity with the Kansas City Chiefs just a week after being fired by the Eagles.
Numerous reports have Reid arriving in Kansas City on Friday to ink a deal that will put him in control of the Chiefs, who fired coach Romeo Crennel after the team replicated its worst season in franchise history at 2-14.
This new deal the sides have reportedly agreed on gives Reid more authority over personnel decisions than he had in Philly.
Reid, who went 130-93-1 as Eagles coach, and the Chiefs have reportedly agreed to a deal giving the longtime Eagles coach broad authority over football decisions. General manager Scott Pioli also was fired after four underachieving seasons.
The good news for Reid is that the Chiefs have the No. 1 pick in the draft and should return five Pro Bowl players.
Speculation has mounted that Reid recruit Packers personnel man John Dorsey to work alongside him as general manager.
On Wednesday, the Chiefs dedicated nine hours to interviewing Reid in Philadelphia, when the sides expressed mutual interest. The next day was spent ironing out details of an agreement.
Rebuilding the Chiefs would be quiet a challenge for Reid. K.C. had hopes of challenging for a playoff spot but struggled mightly all season. But in two years he turned a 3-13 Eagles team to 11-5 and second in the rugged NFC East. The next four years Reid’s Eagles won at least 11 games and made it to the 2004 Super Bowl.
“Overall the job is still attractive,” said Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt, who led the search for Crennel’s replacement. “The franchise remains very well respected.”
Hunt told The Associated Press this week that he was changing the Chiefs’ organizational structure so that the coach and general manager report directly to him. Since his late father Lamar founded the team 53 years ago, the coach typically reported to the general manager.
