The Hobbit fans will get to see both the second and third pieces to the franchise’s puzzle almost back-to-back. As recently announced, moviegoers will only to wait seven months between the second and third installments of Peter Jackson’s highly anticipated trilogy.
Warner Bros and MGM Pictures announced today that the final film in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy will be released worldwide on July 18, 2014.
Jackson initially planned only two movies based on popular novel by J.R.R. Tolkien’s, but then recently decided there was enough material for a third movie.
The first film in the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, hit theaters on December 14, 2012. The second edition, already named The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, will be released a year later, on Dec. 13, 2013. The Hobbit: There and Back Again, which is the title of the third installment, will hit the big screen only seven months after the release of the second film.
Dan Fellman, the president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, said: “We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films of The Hobbit Trilogy. Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure.”
Jackson will shoot all three films in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. The trilogy is a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.
