Another Nicki Minaj feud may be brewing. This time, the rapper has made some choice comments about her Grammy snub and the recording academy.
“I’ve gotten tons of awards and I believe when it’s my time to get a Grammy, I’ll get a Grammy,” she said to E!, initially playing nice.
Then Minaj hinted she believes there is something perhaps political at work in her snub. “I think that the Grammys had a different reason that I do not want to discuss…and that’s just between me and them,” she added.” But I respect their organization and I’ll get a Grammy eventually. I’m not worried about it.”
Minaj did receive three nominations last year for her debut, Pink Friday, including Best New Artist and Best Rap Album. She famously performed at the 2012 show with a performance that featured a mock exorcism, which included a confession, blazing flames, holy water, and altar boys. She even walked the red carpet with a man dressed like the Pope.
The performance predictably outraged certain viewers, causing the Catholic League to attack the Recording Academy for allowing the performance to begin with. “None of this was by accident, and all of it was approved by The Recording Academy, which puts on the Grammys. Whether Minaj is possessed is surely an open question, but what is not in doubt is the irresponsibility of The Recording Academy. Never would they allow an artist to insult Judaism or Islam,” said Catholic League spokesman Bill Donahue.
However, this year Minaj was shut out of nominations completely for her sophomore follow up, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. So, perhaps the ambiguous “reason” Minaj alludes to has to do with the negative comments the organization received on her behalf.
The Grammys will air live on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Feb. 10. No word as to whether Nicki will be in attendance with another pope.
