North Carolina A&T, the HBCU in Greensboro with more than 10,000 students, was placed on lockdown after a man carrying a rifle was spotted on campus.
Officials said no shots have been fired.
“A black male has been seen carrying a rifle on campus,” North Carolina A&T State University said on its website. “The University is on lockdown. Everyone should stay inside, close and lock your doors and windows.”
The school said the man with the weapon was reportedly observed near a classroom building.
Several public schools in Greensboro were also locked down Friday because of their proximity to the university.
With the wave of shootings in recent years on school campuses, from Virginia Tech to Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., schools are quick to react to reports of guns on campus.
