Whoopi Goldberg was intent on keeping order on Thursday morning’s episode of “The View.” The head host was forced to pump the brakes on the usual overzealous culprit Meghan McCain, who refused to let her co-hosts to get a word in edgewise.
The daytime hosts were discussing ongoing fallout over President Donald Trump‘s decision to pull U.S. troops out of northern Syria when McCain, 34, launched into an impassioned speech about how the move left the Kurdish forces out to be “slaughtered.”
The crisis in the Middle Eastern nation escalated Thursday after neighboring Turkey launched an attack against the Kurds, who’ve fought alongside American troops in the fight against terror group ISIS.
“These people are being killed, and slaughtered, “McCain began. “There is blood on anyone’s hands … including President Trump’s, who is letting this happen because these people are being slaughtered after standing with our troops in the Middle East for an extremely long time, fighting against terror cells.”
“We’re not entering into a foreign war,” she added, growing more angry. (The Kurds) are proxy that are supporting us. The whole point of having proxys is so we don’t get into another war. And I’m sorry, but have we not learned the lessons of 9/11? And I don’t understand it!”
Co-host Sunny Hostin also weighed in on the issue, arguing it was possible that Trump had withdrawn U.S. troops in an effort to deflect attention from ongoing talks of his impeachment.
“But … this is … I’m sorry, I just can’t talk about impeachment,” an exasperated McCain blurted, interrupting Hostin as she pointed to a recent poll showing 51 percent of Americans favored impeachment and Trump’s removal from office. Hostin managed to finish her point after imploring McCain to allow her to finish.
The outspoken co-host cut in yet again, however, when it was Joy Behar‘s turn to offer her take. McCain repeatedly tried talking over her colleague before drawing a strong rebuke from moderator Goldberg.
“Let Joy finish, please!” Goldberg shouted, throwing up her hand. “Let Joy say what she has to say.”
Behar, 77, began by quoting renowned poet Maya Angelou: “When someone shows you who they are believe them” the first time.
The longtime panelist argued that Republicans don’t deserve a pat on the back for finally “standing up” to Trump when they willingly backed his forced separation of families at the U.S. Mexico border.
“These children were locked up, separated from their parents,” she opined. “And these people — [South Carolina Sen.] Lindsey Graham, Moscow Mitch [McConnell, the Senate majority leader] … all these despicable people backed this man when he separated children. That’s who is is. And what makes you think this man cares about innocent Kurds being slaughtered when he doesn’t care about children being taken away from their parents?”
Online, viewers cheered Goldberg for calling out McCain’s blatant disrespect.
“I applaud you Whoopi for shutting that loud-mouth up!” one critic wrote. “She already spoke her opinion. Give Joy and the others a chance for Pete’s sake!!!”
“Will someone please tell @MeghanMcCain this is not the Meghan McCain show?!??!,” said one Twitter user.
“Well, when Meghan said that she didn’t want to talk about impeachment, she made Sunny’s point….. it’s a distraction,” another chimed in. “Of course she is much too emotional to realize it.”
Another suggested the reason for McCain’s outburst was because she “doesn’t want to confront her own hypocrisy concerning the children at the border and those in Syria.”
“Does ABC not see how unprofessional Meghan is? Like.. its beyond ridiculous now,” another argued.
