‘Good Man’: Michael Jordan Pledges $1 Million Toward Relief Efforts in the Bahamas

Michael Jordan said he’s donating $1 million to help with the relief efforts in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian struck earlier this month.

As reported, the storm completely ravaged the country, and according to NBC News the death toll is now at 50. Thousands of people are still missing as well.

Jordan owns property in the Bahamas, and through his manager Estee Portnoy he explained how much the storm’s aftermath hurt him. The retired NBA star and Charlotte Hornets owner also said he’ll work with nonprofits in the country so the funds are dispersed in the best way possible.

“I am devastated to see the destruction that Hurricane Dorian has brought to the Bahamas, where I own property and visit frequently,” he stated in the message tweeted on Sept. 10. “My heart goes out to everyone who is suffering and to those who have lost loved ones.”

“As the recovery and relief efforts continue, I will be tracking the situation closely and working to identify nonprofit agencies where the funds will have the most impact,” added Jordan. “The Bahamian people are strong and resilient and I hope that my donation will be of help as they work to recover from this catastrophic storm.”

The six-time NBA champ joins a list of other celebrities who are helping the Bahamas. Tyler Perry, for example, recently used his private plane to send supplies to the Abaco Islands, including water, juice, sleeping bags, diapers and items for personal hygiene.

Ludacris also did his part and said all of the proceeds from his annual LudDay Weekend that recently took place would go toward relief efforts.

“Over 100k Raised over The Weekend!! THANK YOU TO ALL WHO SHOWED UP AND SHOWED OUT!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 NOW WATCH ME WORK!!” wrote the rapper on Instagram last week.

On Sept. 2 Rihanna also shared a message about the Category 5 storm and said she’d provide assistance through her nonprofit the Clara Lionel Foundation.

“It truly breaks my heart to see the complete devastation that #HurricaneDorian is having on the Bahamas!” tweeted the singer. “You are in our prayers and @ClaraLionelFdn is already figuring out how best we can help! #HurricaneDorain #Bahamas.”

Perry, Ludacris and Rihanna all received plenty of thanks for their assistance, as did Jordan after his message was sent.

“Good man!!” one person wrote.

“Total class step up Hollywood; athletes among others they need help,” wrote another.
