Stephen Colbert Wants Cardi B to Deliver State of the Union Rebuttal — And Fans Do Too

Late night talk show host Stephen Colbert thinks Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B has what it takes to address President Donald Trump‘s State of the Union address, so much so that he launched a petition.

“I am starting a petition for the Democrats to let @iamcardib give the rebuttal to the SOTU,” Colbert tweeted earlier this week. “Sign it by retweeting this!”

Fans are overwhelmingly on board with the idea, as the message has been “signed” more than 73,000 times since Wednesday. Cardi, 25, also seems to support Colbert’s push for her to deliver the SOTU rebuttal, writing in a recent tweet, “why not?”

“I get straight to the point,” the “Money Bag” rapper said, followed by a sea of laughing emojis. “Government shutdown over!”

The Bronx rapper caught the attention of lawmakers earlier this month when she gave her two cents on the partial government shut down, which dragged on for 35 days, making it the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. In an Instagram post, Cardi warned her followers to get informed about the impacts of the closure.

“Soo many people under my comments talking about I shouldn’t talk politics, I don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m dumb!,” she began. “Well I know a little something something. I know 800,000 federal government workers won’t be getting paid till the shutdown is over and government assistants [sic] program are shutdown as well — as in NO WELFARE, NO WIC, SECTION 8.”

“I know it’s a little boring to watch the news, but it won’t kill ya to visit some IG pages of people that talk about what’s going on in our community,” she continued. “PAY ATTENTION !!! This can go on for months and it will affect our homes and country.”

The new mom also recently went head to head with conservative pundit Stephanie Hamill who argued her explicit music videos are bad for the #MeToo and “Time’s Up” movements against sexual assault.

My video “says to women that I can wear and not wear whatever I want to,” Cardi wrote. “Do [whatever] I want, and that NO still means NO. So Stephanie chime in … if I twerk and be half naked, does that mean I deserve to get raped and molested? I want to know what a conservative woman like you thinks.”

The rapper’s epic, and politically informed, clap backs have had fans screaming “Cardi for President!”
