“The View‘s” Abby Huntsman applauded her old Fox News colleague Martha McCallum‘s interview with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, a talk co-host Sunny Hostin decried as a “softball interview.”
On Monday, Kavanaugh talked exclusively with the conservative news network to address accusations of sexual assault that have threatened to derail his confirmation to the highest court in the land. So far, three women, including university professor Christine Blasey Ford, have come forward to accuse the longtime judge of sexual misconduct.
Kavanaugh has vehemently denied the allegations, telling Fox News, “What I know is the truth, and the truth is I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone.”
Huntsman said she thought McCallum did a “great” interview, adding that she trusts that her former boss, White House communications director Bill Shine, knows what he’s doing as he guides Kavanaugh on the path to confirmation.
“If you watch this interview, she is good at that, and she is a wonderful woman,” she said of McCallum. “I can speak from personal experience, but she asked the questions that I would have asked if I were sitting across the room from him.”
She was immediately shut down by co-host Joy Behar, who noted that McCallum was a vocal supporter of disgraced Fox News CEO Roger Ailes, who resigned in July 2016 amid allegations of workplace sexual harassment.
Hostin was unimpressed with the interview as a whole, saying McCallum certainly “didn’t ask the questions I would have asked as a former sex crimes prosecutor.” Hostin said she would’ve pressed Kavanaugh on his alleged heavy drinking in college, questionable entries in his yearbook pointing, yet again, to drinking and sex with a classmate, and why he was opposed to an FBI investigation into the accusations against him.
“She didn’t follow up as most journalists do, and as certainly as lawyers do,” she said.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg also questioned why the Supreme Court nominee was so against an FBI investigation, a question Huntsman said Kavanaugh answered in the interview.
“[McCallum] did ask that, and he said, ‘I want a fair process where I can defend my integrity and clear my name as quickly as I can,’” Huntsman said. “He said, ‘I want the Senate to do what they feel is best.’”
“That’s what the FBI investigation would be, is it not?” Goldberg replied.
Hostin chimed in, “I have to tell you, I mean, again, for a nominee to sit for a Fox interview, but not be willing to sit for an FBI interview is really, really rich. It really is.”
Ford, who accused Kavanaugh of assaulting her at a high school party, is expected to testify in an open hearing before the Senate on Thursday.
