This Clip of Maya Angelou Will Remind You That She Was More Than an Acclaimed Poet

The story of poet and writer Dr. Maya Angelou will be brought to life in the newest documentary entitled Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, directed by Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack.

The clip above shows Angelou early in her career as a calypso dancer and singer. Actress Diahann Carroll says the famous poet was a statuesque beauty entertaining crowds before being known for her poetry and literary talent.

The trend in music during the 1950s was Afro-Caribbean inspired and Angelou was a hot commodity. She was so popular that she was even known as Miss Calypso. Angelou performed on many stages during her singing career and even appeared in a few films.

Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise will be screened for the public at the American Film Institute Documentary Film Festival June 22-26 in the Washington, D.C. area.
