Community activists rallied with a new sense of hope when San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr resigned after his officers killed an unarmed Black woman Thursday morning.
NBC News reported that dozens of activists and residents gathered in front of City Hall Thursday night celebrating a new beginning between officers and the Black community.
After Suhr’s resignation, it was announced that the SFPD would be headed by a Black officer, Acting Chief Toney Chaplin.
“It’s very exciting because we’ve been working two years on this, so this is party time right now,” said Oscar Salinas of Justice for Alex Nieto. “But the work has just begun.”
Black Lives Matter activists were on site continuing their fight for police transparency and an end to police brutality. They also realize that this is just a small step to actual solutions.
Phelicia Jones of the Justice for Mario Woods coalition told NBC News:
“I am elated that he finally decided to resign. It’s a small victory, but a victory all the same. But we still have a lot of work to do. We have to change a culture.”
