Rave Reviews: Grand Theft Auto V

The most anticipated video game in years, Grand Theft Auto Vwas released on Monday, to the delight of many gamers. The Rockstar games, the production company of GTA V, has put a lot of stock into this title, as the budget for the new game totaled $260 million. It has only been one day, but the critics are already claiming GTA V a hit. According to theguardian.com:

” No one constructs worlds like Rockstar and this one is worth many, many hours of exploration. It is fun, so much guilty, ridiculous fun. It is beautiful to look at, it is jammed with ideas, and when the free add-on, Grand Theft Auto Online, comes out in October, it will offer a compelling multiplayer experience, where participants combine and face off in gigantic turf wars.”

The Grand Theft series has always aimed to provide players with an immersive game world in which to play, and this time around they seemed to have accomplished that, well beyond the imaginations of most gamers.

Grand Theft Auto V is also being praised for its take on modern culture. As reported by usatoday.com:

“Rockstar also does not hesitate to use its platform to poke fun at modern culture. All three characters have profiles on social networks such as LifeInvader (Facebook) and radio ads for products that slow the aging process through the magic of formaldehyde. There are even several digs at certain military-themed first-person shooters that are all the rage. The social commentary found in these spaces is as interesting as the characters starring in the game.”

The critics are already praising Grand Theft Auto 5, but time will tell if gamers draw the same conclusion; and with a budget that rivals that of some major movies, Rockstar Games is literally banking that they will.
