In running back Reggie Bush’s debut with the Detroit Lions, the Minnesota Vikings chose to focus on Lions’ wide receiver Calvin Johnson, ignoring Bush, which pretty much left him wide open to do some amazing things.
The Vikings were able to shutdown Johnson, who set an NFL single-season record for receiving yards last year. But the extra attention on Johnson and the lack thereof on Bush, gave him room to carry the football 21 times for 90 yards, catch four passes for 101 more yards and scoring a dazzling touchdown sprinting up the midfield untouched by Viking defenders.
“Haven’t seen a five- or six-man box since New Orleans, so it’s been a while,” said Bush, who played the last two years in Miami after spending his first five NFL seasons with the Saints. “And it was very pleasant looking across that line and seeing those guys worried about Calvin and not me.”
In what was the season opener for both teams, the Lions defeated the Vikings 34-24.
