The seven-time All-Star made his announcement via ESPN and Twitter on Monday morning. McGrady, who spent 16 seasons in the NBA, entered the league straight from high school after he was the ninth overall pick by the Toronto Raptors in the 1997 NBA draft.
After he was traded from the Raptors, he played with the Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks. He finished his career last season by signing with the San Antonio Spurs late in the year.
The 34-year-old averaged 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game throughout his career that was plagued by injuries.
McGrady said on ESPN that it’s been “a great run. But it’s time for it to come to an end.”
Though he will not be playing in the NBA, McGrady has not ruled out continuing his career overseas.
