The talking zoo animals from Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted continued to light up the screen and American hearts this weekend, once again conquering the box office and besting its big budget foes like Prometheus and Tom Cruise’s new vehicle, Rock of Ages.
While on screen Madagascar 3 doesn’t appear to be a black movie, it does star the voices of Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Cedric the Entertainer—in addition to Ben Stiller, Sacha Baron Cohen and David Schwimmer. With $35.5 million for the weekend, the movie now has grossed more than $120 million in North America in its first two weeks, both at number one.
Prometheus by director Ridley Scott and starring Charlize Theron and Idris Elba has raked in close to $90 million in North America in its two weekends. Coming in third was the heavily anticipated Rock of Ages, starring Tom Cruise as the mammoth star of a heavy metal hair band. But with just $15 million, the film’s showing was considered a huge disappointment.
