Peter Jackson’s winter hit movie The Hobbit, the prequel to the blockbuster trilogy The Lord of the Ring, has managed to earn the title of the highest gross paying movie for opening day in the month of December ever. During it’s midnight premier The Hobbit made $13.0 million, but by the end of the day it managed to make astonishing $37.5 million. By the end of the weekend it is said to make a gross between $90-$100 million.
The Hobbit managed to beat out its counterpart, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, that managed a gross of $34.5 million on its opening day back in December 2003. The Hobbit is also expected to overtake I Am Legend’, which totaled $77.2 million for it’s December opening debut.
This three-part film adaption of J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, follows the story about the dwarf, Bilbo Baggins, that journeys to Lonely Mountain with a group of dwarves to recover treasure that was stolen by the dragon Smaug.
