The official poster for the upcoming espionage and war thriller Zero Dark Thirty has finally been released courtesy of Yahoo! Movies.
Zero Dark Thirty stands as Kathryn Bigelow’s long awaited follow up feature to her Oscar winning thriller The Hurt Locker, which earned Bigelow an Oscar for Best Director and the entire production an Oscar for Best Picture. It also made her the first woman in Academy Award history to win Best Director. She certainly has come a long way since Point Break. In any case, to say Zero Dark Thirty has a lot to live up to would be quite the understatement.
The film itself will follow the decade long manhunt for Osama bin Laden after the attacks on the World Trade Center. It will inevitably conclude with bin Laden’s 2011 death at the hands of Navy SEAL Team 6. Presumably, Bigelow will be playing to her strengths in terms of intensity.
Zero Dark Thirty’s poster features a satellite image over the bin Laden compound, possibly at night, with Black Hawk helicopters hovering above its roof. This is moments before SEAL Team 6’s raid into the compound and the eradication of one of the most sought after men in American history.
Although it’s difficult to properly judge Bigelow’s new film given the political climate surrounding its release, it’s safe to say Zero Dark Thirty has the potential to be thought provoking if worked directly from its source material: actual events. If given any sort of political spin, this film can possibly deter a significant portion of audiences within five minutes. It also runs the risk of staying too objective and establishing no emotional connection whatsoever to moviegoers.
Luckily, by Zero Dark Thirty’s release on December 19, the November elections will be over and no sort of political agenda can be worked into the movie. Or can it? Enjoy the poster below.
