As speculated upon last week, Matt Reeves has been confirmed to direct the upcoming film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes following the recent departure of Rupert Wyatt.
This means Reeves has beaten the likes of Guillermo del Toro, Jeff Nichols and J. Blakeson in taking over the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes which Rupert Wyatt successfully helmed in 2011. Rumor has it that Wyatt has been replaced because of refusing to adhere to a May 2014 release date.
While there’s always been plenty of buzz surrounding Matt Reeves, it’s hard to say whether or not he’s worth it. Sure, 2008’s Cloverfield was impressive and there’s no doubting that Let Me In, in spite of being a remake, gave American audiences the first decent vampire film since Interview with the Vampire. But what else has he done, other than promise an eventual sequel for Cloverfield (which may or may not even happen).
Matt Reeves has actually just been doing exactly that – garnering more and more buzz. He’s been rumored to direct the film version of The Twilight Zone, a Frankenstein feature titled The Dark Endeavor, and his own dream project titled The Invisible Woman. Perhaps with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Reeves will finally produce a convincing film that gives his other projects the green light.
