Jay Leno confronts 24 star Kiefer Sutherland over 24 movie delay.
News broke that the long awaited 24 movie was being pushed back over scheduling, budget and financial issues. The actor made an apperreance on NBC’s The Tonight Show With Jay Leno to promote his new TV show Touch. Leno asked Sutherland, “What’s going on with the 24 movie?”
Watch the actor’s reply in the video below.
Sutherland explained that there are a lot of moving parts that have to fit together – because of the small window between the time he finished the first season of Touch and the time he must be available for season 2, should the show get renewed.
Rumor has it that the biggest issues are financial. Fox wanted a budget of around $30 million, while the filmmakers wanted $45 to $60 million. The actor was originally going to get $5 million with major points, but that plan fell through and development stalled. The studio’s plan was to ride the wave of the TV show’s popularity and make the film at a bargain and make big profits on the back end. They never addressed that issue until recently, leading to time conflicts, and they felt there wasn’t enough time to pull the film off in just seven weeks of prep.
The movie is being produced by Sutherland and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment. The script is written by Billy Ray and re-written by Mark Bomback.
