A noticeable blip while speaking last week is adding another layer to growing public concern over President Donald Trump’s physical condition, particularly as observers continue to scrutinize his movements and behavior during public appearances amid broader questions about his health.
Trump was speaking at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston on Friday when his delivery briefly paused, his body appeared to jerk, and his arms moved in quick succession before he continued talking. On its own, the moment might have passed unnoticed.
Instead, a clinical and forensic psychologist has since analyzed footage of the episode and raised red flags about whether Trump’s unusual lapse could point to something more serious.
John Paul Garrison, a Georgia-based clinical and forensic psychologist, said the movements seen during Trump’s speech were consistent with a possible focal aware seizure, also known as a partial seizure.
Garrison stressed that he was offering his own opinion rather than a medical diagnosis, but called it “the most concerning footage” of Trump he had analyzed and said the episode appeared neurological in nature.
“For the past few months, I have been showing various neurological concerns and some steep signs of decline from President Trump, but what we’re going to start with today is extremely concerning,” Garrison said, according to Raw Story.
Recorded during the Congressional Space Medal of Honor presentation at the space center, the footage shows Trump discussing the stock market when his remarks suddenly faltered. His right arm jerked upward, followed by a momentary blink and a hesitation in his voice, before movement appeared in his left arm.
Garrison said the sequence was notable because the movements appeared to involve several parts of Trump’s body rather than a single isolated muscle.
“What you just observed was a distinct and concerning neurological event, and you got to watch it cross both hemispheres in his brain — I’ll explain what I mean,” Garrison stated in a viral video posted to YouTube, noting that his analysis was strictly his own opinion.
“You saw his right arm jerk, and then you saw him blink, you heard his voice hesitate, and then you saw his left arm jerk. You literally watched it travel across his brain. To be very clear, these were not simple muscle spasms; this is not something related to pain — you don’t see any pain on his face. You actually watch it travel from one arm, to his eyes, to his voice, to his left arm.”
Garrison went on to suggest that the episode could resemble a focal aware seizure, a type of seizure in which a person can remain conscious while abnormal electrical activity occurs in part of the brain. Such seizures can sometimes spread to other areas.
“Now, what this is very consistent with is something that we see in people that have had strokes called a focal aware seizure or a focal motor seizure, and this can be focused in one part in the brain, and occasionally, it can spread to both parts of the brain,” Garrison explained.
He stopped short of claiming that Trump had suffered a seizure or an episode of dysphasia.
“I’m not insisting that’s what’s going on with him, but it is clearly something neurological, whether it’s post-stroke or something else.”
Garrison’s broader analysis also examined several of Trump’s recent public appearances, including an executive order signing related to his initiative to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” and a viral TikTok video depicting Trump personally writing “Lake America” across a map of the lake. In evaluating these clips, Garrison highlighted what he described as unusual speech patterns, confusion, repetitive thinking, involuntary physical movements, and sudden shifts in facial expression.
The psychologist also examined the possibility that stress could be affecting Trump’s behavior, citing the controversy surrounding his close aide Natalie Harp as well as disputes surrounding the construction of the White House ballroom. However, Garrison cautioned that observing behavior in a video cannot, on its own, serve as a substitute for a clinical diagnosis.
The episode comes amid renewed questions regarding Trump’s physical condition, following reports that he has gained more than 20 pounds since his 2024 campaign. The Washington Post reported that Trump weighed 238 pounds during his May physical — up from the 215 pounds listed on his August 2023 Fulton County jail booking record.
The report said outside doctors viewed the weight gain as a significant health risk. Trump, however, has repeatedly dismissed the concerns.
“Maybe junk food is good, and the other food is no good,” Trump said in May, according to the Washington Post. “I know many, many people that all they do is watch their weight, their this, their that, and they kicked the bucket, and here we are. I feel great.”
Public scrutiny of Trump’s health has also focused on his chronic venous insufficiency diagnosis, which the White House confirmed after observers noticed swelling in his lower legs, as well as recurring bruises on his hands and arms.
White House medical memos have consistently attributed the hand discoloration to a daily aspirin regimen combined with frequent handshaking.
Online reaction to the NASA footage ranged from alarm to sarcasm.
One commenter wrote, “Not surprised. He’s being held together with tape and pins. How much you want to bet he posts that the Johnson Space Center should be changed to the Trump Space Center?”
Another declared, “This man is ill.”
A Raw Story commenter took the opposite view, writing, “I would refer to this event as ‘encouraging’ rather than ‘concerning’.”
One person joked, “Face down in a Big Mac. Sooner than later.”
Someone else said the pattern appeared more pronounced in another speech, writing, “No this speech, but another you can see it travel from one side to the other, with his speech taking a hit in the middle (eyes blinked rapidly too). The walking, the stroke face, the fact that he mentioned they have drugs to bring people back to life…hanging by a thread.”
