Legendary vocalist Gladys Knight started singing before she could read, sharing her gift at church when she was just 4 years old.
That little girl from Atlanta would become the Empress of Soul, giving generations a soundtrack for love, heartbreak and catching midnight trains.
More than seven decades later, her voice remains one of music’s most treasured. But her decision to scale back her performances has fans questioning whether the stage has become too demanding.
Those concerns grew after Knight, 82, appeared to experience a dizzy spell during an Aug. 18 concert at Detroit’s Fisher Theatre.
She looked exhausted and took several breaks while her backup singers did their best to keep the show going. Concertgoers who found it difficult to watch the “Love Overboard” singer left early.
As the conversation about her well-being grew online, Knight announced that she was reducing her performance schedule. She still has concert dates booked through November.
“After much soul searching I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward,” she wrote on social media on Aug. 27.
In a lengthy statement, the singer said she plans to work on projects with her husband, William McDowell, and spend more time with her grandchildren. She also thanked fans for making “a little girl’s dream come true.”

Concern intensified after footage from her July 25 Hollywood Bowl performance surfaced. Knight appeared to lose her place during “Midnight Train to Georgia.”
She turned away from the audience and began walking offstage. A backup singer attempted to guide her back.
“Gladys is 82 years old who’s freaking idea was this? She looks so lost and confused they need to cancel her tour let her rest at home. Let the icon rest already!” one X user wrote.
Another said, “I had the absolute PRIVILEGE of seeing Gladys Knight at the Hollywood Bowl a couple years ago. she was in TIP TOP shape. seeing this is so sad & concerning. definitely miles different from what I experienced.”
Speculation about Knight’s health is not new. In 2025, her son, Shanga Hankerson, accused McDowell of pushing an exhausting touring schedule.
Knight denied his claims of alleged mental and financial abuse and declared herself “healthy and happy.”
“Gladys Knight’s husband is to blame. He is forcing her to maintain a heavy touring schedule despite her showing signs of cognitive decline and dementia,” one person suggested.
One fan offered more details about the moment, saying Gladys Knight seemed confused during the concert and relied on her backup singer to carry the performance.
“Gladys turned her back to the audience and just stared, then she started to walk offstage while the backup singer was still singing. The backup singer took Gladys by the arm, trying to get Gladys to come back, but Gladys ignored her and kept walking, that’s where the video ended.”
The longtime fan, who has followed Knight since the 1970s, added, “There is no one like her. It was hard to see her so disoriented.”
Knight has not announced a dementia diagnosis. McDowell has acknowledged that his wife has “good days and bad” and said she would undergo a medical evaluation.
“No one is ever gonna make me say, ‘My wife is well,’ but all she wants to do is sing,” he said, according to TMZ.
Now, fans are debating whether her next chapter should happen away from the stage.
“Looks like Gladys Knight is calling it a career & deservedly so at 82,” one fan wrote.
“The internet and media finally bullied Auntie Gladys Knight into retiring,” another complained.
A third offered perhaps the simplest sentiment: “I love her but if things is getting bad for her time to retire. I rather have the queen around more time than hitting a stage. She paid her dues.”
The allegations recall the family turmoil surrounding late “Good Times” star John Amos. His daughter accused his son of neglect and financial exploitation. Police closed that investigation without finding evidence. Amos denied being abused.

Male singers Ron Isley and Charlie Wilson have continued performing amid health concerns. Frankie Beverly kept touring while visibly struggling before his 2024 death. Other entertainers have stepped away when performing became too demanding.
Knight has already delivered several lifetimes of music. She won seven Grammys, entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the Pips and received a Kennedy Center Honor.
