A Black hairstylist in Washington D.C., is drawing attention online after a video showed a white couple questioning her presence inside an apartment building while she waited for a client.
@Niniluvs.yu, who posted the encounter to TikTok on Aug. 11, filmed herself sitting in the lobby while a white couple stood nearby, repeatedly questioning why she was there. Nini remained calm and explained that she had permission to enter the building.
“I need you to step away from me if that’s OK. I have permission to be here,” Nini said at the start of the video. When the couple asked who she was waiting for, she simply answered, “A person.”
Nini continued trying to reassure the couple that she posed no threat.
“You guys are OK. I promise. I’m not going to hurt you guys. I’m not going to hurt the building,” she said. She explained that her client was on the way down to meet her.
The couple said their concern centered on building rules. They claimed residents could face fines for allowing someone inside who did not live there or have permission to enter.
‘Just Trying to Work’
Both pulled out their phones, apparently to contact someone about Nini’s presence. Nini continued speaking with them and eventually explained why she had started recording.
“Unfortunately, you guys know I have to record for my safety,” she said. The man agreed that filming was fine.
Nini then told the couple she was simply trying to work.
“Just trying to work, y’all. We got people worried about me instead of going on about their business,” she said.
The man pushed back, telling her she was not supposed to be inside because of the building’s rules. Nini responded with a sarcastic question that quickly became one of the most memorable moments in the clip.
“Who made you guys Captain Save-a-H–?” she asked.
The couple sat down in the waiting room chairs across from the stylist. The woman continued explaining that she and her husband worried that management would track who entered and exited the building and fine them for allowing Nini inside. Nini responded sarcastically, asking how much the supposed fine would be.
The man said it could cost them “a couple hundred bucks.”

‘That’s the Rule’
The conversation continued even after Nini made clear that she did not want to answer more questions. When the man asked whether her client knew she was there, Nini replied, “I’m not obligated to answer any of your questions.”
The situation finally shifted when Nini’s client arrived. She pointed toward the couple and joked that they had remained in the lobby just to watch her.
“Oh my god look who’s here for me, look at them two they literally sat here just to watch me,” she said.
The woman then tried to explain the building rules directly to Nini’s client. She told him that visitors could not enter unless they lived there or a resident came downstairs to escort them.
The client appeared surprised.
“Oh, I didn’t know that,” he said.
The woman insisted, “That’s the rule.”
Nini then followed her client upstairs but got in one final question before leaving.
“You guys have a blessed day. Do you guys own the building?”
The man replied that they owned part of it.
“We own part of it, yes.”
‘They’re not Concerned’
The video quickly drew reactions from viewers, with many questioning why the couple remained focused on Nini while she waited for her client. Some commenters also accused the pair of treating her differently because she is Black.
One person questioned the couple’s reasoning, writing, “So why the lobby chairs? Seems like a waiting area.” Another commenter was more direct, saying, “They’re not concerned, they’re RACIST.”
Others focused on the authority the couple appeared to have over Nini’s presence in the building. One viewer wrote, “Let’s normalize not engaging with people that have no authority over you. Please!”
Another person questioned the couple’s claim that they partially owned the building. “They said they own part of the building but can get fined for letting people in, fined by who if they’re part owners??” the commenter asked.
Other viewers found humor in Nini’s sarcastic attempts to reassure the couple. One wrote, “Telling them they’re safe in a condescending way is so funny.”
Nini identifies herself online as a DMV-area hairstylist and uses her platform to highlight the deeper meaning behind her work. In her YouTube bio, she describes doing hair as more than a skill, calling it “a gift God placed in my hands and my heart.”
She says she hopes to create a space centered on “peace, purpose, and passion,” where clients feel cared for while getting their hair done. Nini also describes hair as something sacred and says she wants everyone who sits in her chair to leave feeling not only styled but “uplifted.”
