President Donald Trump thought he was touting his tax cuts at an event in Nevada after signing his “One Big Beautiful Act” into law last year, but a Black man he called onto the stage stole the show after making an unexpected admission.
The man, later identified as a foreman with Teamsters Local 631 in Clark County, Nevada, turned the moment into an awkward disaster, and the White House made it even worse.
It happened at the Red Rocks Casino in Las Vegas, where Trump held a rally on Wednesday to boast about his economic policies and his massive tax giveaway to the wealthiest Americans.
Officially known as the Working Families Tax Cuts bill, it cut trillions of dollars in health care and social safety net programs that helped the most vulnerable Americans in order to pay for the tax break for millionaires and billionaires while doing little to help working families.
It also included temporary tax breaks on tips and overtime pay, something Trump went to Nevada to crow about given Las Vegas’ large service industry.
The union worker, dressed in red and wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap and who seemed like a plant, critics contend, was called onto the stage to talk about how he benefited from Trump’s no tax on tips and overtime, but he made a stunning statement that made headlines instead.
“To the unions, we don’t all get tips, but we do work long hours, hard hours. Ninety-six hours a week,” he began, which opponents point out he can thank Trump for, too.
“Yeah, most of the time I’m not up on current affairs. I don’t have a clue what’s going on on the planet,” he astonishingly admitted, before continuing on to thank Trump for the tax break.
“I thank you for allowing us to keep this money that we work so hard for,” he gushed.
Then he made another startling statement.
“Yeah, I’ve just gone through a divorce and given up everything, but the fact I got so much back on my taxes, I was still able to buy a new house. Put her in one too,” he claimed.
Social media erupted in disbelief and amazement over the man’s claims.
“He didn’t buy a house in Las Vegas with money he got back on his taxes. That was absolutely scripted and he played the part as tRump’s token POC. Prove me wrong,” a Threads user suggested.
Poster Valerie Complex pointed out, “He paid that man $250 for him to go on stage and embarrass himself. I hate this.”
Another commenter agreed, “Trump probably threw him a 100 dollar bill and said put on my hat and go up there and say something.”
Others noted his remark about not having “a clue” about world affairs.
“’I don’t have a clue what’s going on on the planet’ if that quote doesn’t encapsulate all of MAGA perfectly.”
Threads user Lucky Lefty joked, “This is a real life Chappelle show.”
The White House put its own spin on the union worker’s appearance, ignoring his odd remarks and playing up the man’s comment thanking Trump “for allowing us to keep this money that we work so hard for” in a post on X.
Trump claims his “One Big Beautiful Bill” has saved workers in Nevada thousands of dollars, that more than 440,000 service workers in the state have saved an average of $10,000 in tax refunds, according to CPA Practice Advisor.
But the left-leaning Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy says in reality most Americans are paying more for just about everything from food and gas to rent and utilities due not only to Trump’s tax policies, but also to his whipsawing tariffs.
In fact, the organization says the only ones actually benefiting from the president’s policies are the wealthiest 5 percent of Americans.
