‘I Have Never Taught Him That’: 8-Year-Old Boy Saves Grandfather from Drowning In North Carolina Pool

An 8-year-old North Carolina boy is being credited for saving his grandfather’s life.

Christian Matos said he enjoys spending time with his grandfather, but that almost came to an end when the elderly man nearly drowned in a Greensboro pool on Aug. 18. However, thanks to Christian’s heroic efforts, his grandfather is around to make more memories.

“He takes care of me when I’m sad. He gives me Gatorade or soda, even Coke, or we go on a walk,” Christian said.

Christian and his grandfather were playing in an apartment complex pool when the older man went underwater to wet his hair, reports show.

“He swallowed too much of the water, and I just saw him laying there with his head down and arms like this, and I felt his heart, and it wasn’t doing anything,” Christian said.

According to reports, Christian dragged his grandfather, who was more than double his size, out of the pool and performed CPR on him. His mother, Cerise Hammie, is stunned by the boy’s actions. She told reporters that she never taught the boy CPR.

“I have never taught him that. It has never even dawned on me to teach him that. It’s a shame, but it’s true. All of it goes to God. It had to have been God to step in and let this boy do what he did,” said Hammie.

The 61-year-old man was still in the hospital recovering as of Aug. 19. Christian is looking forward to spending time again with his grandfather.

“I want to hang out with him again, hug him and stuff, take him on a walk, but no pool anymore,” Christian said.
