TV personalities Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King share a friendship that has withstood the test of time. With 45 years of memories between them, both women say the secret to their lasting bond has been happiness.
Sitting in an enclosed patio area while vacationing in Hawaii, King, 66, and Winfrey, 67, echoed similar sentiments while speaking on the role something as simple as happiness has been a key component to their longevity.
“One of the reasons we remain friends is the same thing that I tell people, surround yourself with somebody who is as happy for your happiness as you are for your happiness,” Winfrey said in the video shared to the“Oprah Daily” Instagram account. “Over the years Gayle has always been happier, I would have to say, happier for my happiness,” she added. King agreed.
“We’re very similar. We really are,” the “CBS This Morning” co-host said.
The duos enduring friendship dates back to 1976 when both women were young journalists earning their stripes Baltimore’s WJZ news station. Since then the two have been virtually inseparable.
“Something about this relationship feels otherworldly to me, like it was designed by a power and hand greater than my own,” said Winfrey in 2006. “Whatever this friendship is, it’s been a very fun ride — and we’ve taken it together.”
In 2006, fans of “The Oprah Show” even watched the two best friends hit the road for a 10-day cross-country trip from Santa Barbara to New York. But with all their individual success and accolades, Winfrey shared that having a friend who isn’t envious of your experiences has made all the difference.
“So you need friends that are happy in their own lives so that they can actually be authentically happy for you,” noted the OWN Network owner. But, King and Winfrey both agree there is one moment the news anchor would have gladly switched places with her BFF.
“You got to come down those stairs and dance with her,” recalled King of Winfrey’s 2006 sing-along with the legendary Tina Turner. Winfrey was quick to interject with, “Gayle said, ‘I wish I could do that.’ But you can’t sing.” King rebutted with a, “Can you? And you can’t either,” as both women broke out into laughter.
The hilarious exchange reminded their fans why their bond is unmatched.
“Name a better duo.”
