‘It’s About Time’: Denzel Washington Rendered Speechless By His Son John David’s High Praise

For decades wide-eyed audiences have been captivated by Denzel Washington’s portrayal of countless characters in scores of films. And for just as long critics, fans, and more have praised his performances.

Still, though the Oscar-award winning actor is no stranger to accolades and standing ovations, it was his son John David Washington’s commendation that took him by surprise.

While speaking with “Access Hollywood” about his upcoming film “The Little Things,” Washington learned his son’s reaction to him topping the New York Time’s “The 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century (So Far)” list.

“It’s about time someone is saying it, you know I think he is. He is one of the greatest to ever do it. So it was a very proud moment for our entire family,” the younger Washington said.

His stunned father took a moment to take in his son’s high praise.

“Wow. I’m speechless,” said Washington with a wide smile lamented across his face. Moments passed and his eyes began to flutter, still overcome with emotion.

“I forgot what the question was, but I’m speechless. You know, I didn’t know he said that,” said Washington. He continued by plugging his daughter Olivia Washington as a great actor as well.

Both Olivia and John David are beginning to make names for themselves as actors. For John David, this has borne fruit in roles in “BlacKkKlansman,” HBO’s show “Ballers,” and the mind-bending film “Tenet.”

“I hope we get to do it again, I hope we get to explore more, because I think we found something really unique,” said John David of a possible “Tenet” sequel.

The rising star is also garnering buzz for his latest project with actress Zendaya, “Malcolm and Marie.” The story explores a young couple’s love being tested as the Malcolm character nears success as a filmmaker. It premieres Feb. 5 on Netflix but has already faced backlash for the age gap between the 24-year-old Zendaya and 36-year-old John Washington.

“I wasn’t concerned about it because she is a woman. People are going to see in this film how much of a woman she is,” Washington explained.
