Nene Leakes and her husband Gregg Leakes were standing on the front lines in support of the Black Lives Matter movement this past weekend. On Sunday, June 7, the original housewife of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” posted a thread of photos on Instagram that depicted her and her husband peacefully protesting.
Without a mask, Gregg Leakes stood at the edge of a sidewalk in one striking image. The businessman wore a blue checked shirt, dark jeans, and glasses. He held up a cardboard sign with the phrase “Black Lives Matter” written in Pan-African colors. Gregg Leakes, a real estate investor, was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in the summer of 2018. Last May his wife announced in an Instagram post that he was cancer-free.
The Swagg boutique founder revealed in her caption that she and her husband were nervous about protesting due to what she described as their compromised immune systems. In 2013, Nene Leakes was hospitalized after doctors discovered blood clots in her lungs. Despite their health concerns, the couple wanted to speak out against racial injustice. She wrote: “Gregg really felt he wanted to get out and try for a few and let everyone know that no matter what, we stand loud and proud! Black Lives Matter and it has ALWAYS mattered.”
Nene Leakes’ photo racked up over 90,000 likes and some 1,000 comments from people applauding the pair for attending the demonstrations.

Although Nene has been using her platform to speak out against police brutality, she recently came under fire from fans for voicing her opinion about looting. At the beginning of June, the “Glee” star expressed in an Instagram post that looting was destroying the Peach State and urged fans to peacefully protest.
