Stewart, 79, stopped by the popular daytime talk show to deliver news that would have Goldberg grinning from ear to ear.
“Alex Kurtzman, who’s the senior executive producer of ‘Star Trek: Picard,’ and all of his colleagues, of which I am one, want to invite you into the 2nd season.”
The audience immediately erupted into cheers and applause. Goldberg’s co-hosts — Meghan McCain, Sunny Hostin and Joy Behar — were just as thrilled and congratulated the “Sister Act” star with high-fives and plenty of hugs.
Goldberg, 64, starred as alien bartender Guinan in the classic sci-fi TV series “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and also made appearances in the feature films “Star Trek Generations” and “Star Trek: Nemesis.” Her character, best known for her folk wisdom and sound advice, first appeared on the second season opening episode in November 1988, and would make recurring appearances over the next four seasons.
“Star Trek was one of the great experiences from the beginning to the end,” said Goldberg. “I had the best, best, best time.”
Stewart agreed, saying: “It was wonderful having you, and I cannot wait to have you with us again one last time.”
Thousands of “Trekkies” took to social media to share their excitement over Goldberg reprising her iconic role on the television series.
“As a die-hard Trekkie, I cried tears of joy at this news,” one fan wrote. “Whoopi was magnificent, iconic even as Guinan on Star Trek TNG. Sir Patrick Stewart, I just love this man. I am looking forward to watching Picard.”
“THIS is what PURE JOY looks like,” another chimed in. “As a fan since the original series, I LOVE this!
Others couldn’t help but gush over the comedienne’s big, bright smile, writing: “Never seen Whoopie’s set of teeth … so beautiful to see her genuinely chuffed. She so girly and beautiful, I am so happy for her.”
“I just loved seeing Whoopi’s smile and that bear hug she gave Patrick Stewart,” someone else added. “It’s everything! She deserves every bit of this goodness. Dreams do come true.”
