It seems that Naomi Osaka is just as good at issuing a clapback as she is at returning a vicious serve.
On Tuesday, Jan. 15, Osaka joined tennis pros such as Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Serena Williams for a charity tennis match in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The event was to raise money for the relief efforts surrounding Australia’s bushfire.
Since the fires began in September 2019, more than 1 billion animals have been killed, 20 people have died and 14 million acres of land have been burned.
TMZ reports that Williams, Osaka and the others raised close to $5 million toward the relief efforts.
Osaka posted a photo of herself and Williams at the event on Wednesday, Jan. 15 and in the caption wrote, “Me and my mom lol.”
For some reason, people took offense to what Osaka wrote and said she shouldn’t be calling Williams her mother.
“More like big sister,” one person wrote in the comments.
“You only have one mom. Serena for sure ain’t mom,” another person stated.
“Ain’t she too young to be your mom?” someone else asked. “Older sister works too.”
Osaka responded to the chatter on Instagram and explained why she called Williams her mother. She also expressed a bit of confusion as to why people were fussing.
“I literally would not be here without her,” wrote Osaka about Williams. “If that’s not some definition of mom idk what is. But sure, get offended by my internet slang I guess.”
But even before the 22-year-old responded, people came to her defense.
“Don’t listen to these losers girl. You call her whatever you want. Mom, OG, sister, auntie or friend,” someone wrote on Instagram. “She knows you and you know her. She’s someone with wisdom in your life helping you grow. The real ones get it.”
“Aye the Black don’t Crack!!!💪🏾,” another person followed. “Mom or Big Sister, Black love is Revolutionary and the two of you are changing the game. Love it. Stay focused and keep punishing these mother lovers!”
