Lil Nas X‘s ubiquitous song “Old Town Road” has been breaking records since it started catching wind a while back, and now he’s broken a new one that could be considered the biggest so far.
Back in March, it was announced that X’s single became the first to land on the Hot 100 list, the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list and the Hot Country Songs list at the same time.
But Billboard removed the cut off its country list, because they said it didn’t fit the genre, which many chalked up to racism since X is black.
This time, however, there’s nothing Billboard can do about this new record, because Chart Data announced that now at 15 weeks, “Old Country Road” has become the biggest debut single ever — a record that was previously held by the song “Macarena” from Los del Río’s.
Not only that,”Old Town Road” has the longest No. 1 chart position on the Hot 100 by an openly gay artist. And if the song stays at the top of the Hot 100 for another week, it’ll tie Mariah Carey’s “One Sweet Day,” as well as “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi.
X shared the news about his song tying the others on Monday and wrote the word “wow” with a bunch of “Os” to express how excited he is.
“BLACK F——G EXCELLENCE‼️‼️” someone commented underneath. “IDGAF WHAT NOBODY GOT TO SAY. THIS S–T IS MAGIC!!”
When “Old Town Road” first became a hit, some rap purists like Dave East, said he couldn’t stand the song, and others said the same thing.
But one of X’s followers said whenever that happens, he just reminds people of the chart position.
“Whenever my friends call you trash I just play old town road and let them know how long the song will stay at the top,” that person wrote.
