“Growing Up Hip Hop” alumna Angela Simmons apparently is proving that she doesn’t need makeup to feel beautiful.
Simmons is known for encouraging women to embrace their flaws and imperfections. She continued to put that practice in place with a few blemish-exposing selfies of her own.
The 31-year-old took to Instagram on Tuesday with a photo collage consisting of images of herself without any makeup or hair extensions. She appeared to be just stepping out of the shower in only a towel. The reality TV star showed off her natural brown curls, ditching her lace front wigs and hair clips, in a set of selfies highlighting her makeup-free natural beauty.
“How many selfies get taken vs what’s posted lol,” Simmons wrote in her caption. “Natural tings!!! I rarely wear it out . But hair care is super important to me . So what I do in my down time to it helps it grow. #NaturalVibes #NoMakeUpVibes.”
Fans exclaimed about how healthy the mother of one’s hair and skin looked and showered her hundreds of compliments.
“Now this is naturally gorgeous 😍😍!!! Post this instead 🙌🏾 you’re Beautiful .”
“They don’t make em like you no more just natural and beautiful pretty 💕.”
“When filters is not need 🙌🏾 this is true Natural Beauty ❤️😍.”
“I love that natural look 💯🔥 so naturally pretty!#soseductive #sounderrated.”
Simmons admitted to not always being the confident woman that she is today. Throughout her teenage years, especially after appearing on MTV’s “Run’s House” in the early 2000s, she struggled with body image issues.
“Growing up, like, honestly speaking, when I was younger, I grew up kind of like thicker. They [her siblings Vanessa and JoJo Simmons] were always small, and I always felt like, ‘I’m big,’” she told the Breakfast Club in June 2018.
“I didn’t embrace my curves because I was so young,” she continued. “I kind of had a little journal I would write in and I would always be like, ‘I think I look like this.’ And I had a little diagram and I would draw this big person and then draw myself skinny. Like, draw the person I want to be, skinny. And it was like, I had body issues. I was concerned that I was fat. I was like, ‘I just feel fat.’ I always had that conversation. I would cry about it. And I would feel like everyone around me was smaller. I just didn’t get it.”
Although that was a difficult period in Simmons’ life, she eventually learned to overcome it with a healthier lifestyle. She’s now on the quest to help women who also struggle with low self-esteem with her fitness and wellness program “Built Not Bought.”
“I think that it is important for people to just love where they’re at and who they are at that moment,” she told BET last May. ”If your body is feeling strange, embrace that and love that too. It doesn’t matter if you have curves or don’t have curves.”
