Ava DuVernay kept her word about casting Tevin Campbell on the fourth season of the OWN drama series “Queen Sugar,” and the singer thanked her for it.
In August of last year, some who probably weren’t familiar with Campbell’s accomplishments as an R&B singer muddied his name. It happened when people were talking about which singers should perform at an Aretha Franklin tribute.
“Someone suggested Tevin Campbell to sing at Aretha’s tribute. Under what rock did they pull that name from?” tweeted the author Luvvie Ajayi.
A lot of folks began belittling the singer from there, but many on Black Twitter came to his defense, including Missy Elliott and Wale.
“No Tevin Campbell slander shall prosper,” Wale tweeted.
DuVernay weighed in one day before the DMV rapper, and that’s when she revealed her plans to cast Campbell on “Queen Sugar.”
“Rebuking any Tevin Campbell slander from millennials and plotting to write him into an episode of Queen Sugar SOMEHOW. On general principle,” she tweeted on August 17 of last year.
After finally making it on the show, Campbell posted a video from the set and thanked DuVernay for keeping her word.
“Hey, y’all. How y’all doing?” he said in the clip that was posted on Tuesday, March 19. “OK, I don’t know what y’all doing, but I know what I’m doing and where I’m at. I’m on the set of ‘Queen Sugar.’ This is so exciting for me, and I want to thank DuVernay, Ava DuVernay. She’s a doer, she kept her word. I want to thank the cast and the crew for making me feel at home like I’ve been here for years.”
Many expressed sheer joy about the singer being on the show, and they thanked DuVernay.
“I’m fainting mentally physically emotionally spiritually digestively I’m fainting. I CANNOT WAIT!!!!” one person wrote.
“This is a good look, Ava/OWN! Thank YOU!” ” wrote another.
“@Ava is a doer, she kept her word.” Welcome to #QueenSugar, Tevin Campbell— stay tuned! 🎤 pic.twitter.com/jKKUcBreyO
