Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Weighs In On the King of R&B Debate: ‘To Be a King, That’s Some Other Sh–‘

Sean “Diddy” Combs weighed in on the whole king of R&B debate.

It started when Cash Money artist Jacquees said he’s the king of the genre for the current generation. That led to responses from Tank and J. Holiday, as well as others who all disagreed.

Diddy also had a different opinion from Jacquees and said the title of king is thrown around way too loosely.

“Heard we talking about some king shit,” he began. “Y’all usually know I mind my business, but R&B is the foundation of my life. To be a king, that’s some other sh–. That word king is too loosely thrown around. Now I understand the concept that we are all kings. But if we’re talking about in the competitive arena of music [that’s something else]. A couple of hits ain’t going to do it.”

“And let’s get to the topic of R&B,” Diddy continued. “Adoring a woman. Not putting her down or not talking about how you just want to smash her, you know what I’m saying? Adoring her.”

Diddy then said there’s other ingredients that go into an R&B song, and if you don’t add those components then you can’t be called king of the genre. The Bad Boy mogul also stated that it’s imperative to talk about love in R&B songs and artists have to be vulnerable, plus, really know how to sing.

And top chart positions come into play too, said Diddy, because without a string of No. 1 hits, you can’t be king. On top of that, he said each one of those hits have to mean something and have substance, as opposed to a singer being trendy or singing about a bunch of foolishness.
