‘Men Are The New B-tches:’ Toni Braxton Reveals She Was Angry After Having To Pay Ex-Husband Alimony

Toni Braxton said it use to bother her that she had to pay alimony to her ex-husband, Mind Condition singer Keri Lewis. It’s something she admitted while talking to Jada Pinkett Smith and her mom Adrienne Banfield-Jones on “Red Table Talk.”

The episode covered the topic of divorce, and Braxton revealed after 12 years of marriage it was her battle with Lupus that caused the split. Because of the Lupus she couldn’t work which led to finacial problems.

But after the Maryland raised songbird regained her health and got back on the road, it angered her that she had to give some of her income to Lewis.

Braxton also said she belongs to a growing group of celebrity women who have to provide financial support to their exes and rattled off a few names.

“Yes. I had to pay alimony. I was one of those girls,” she stated. “It’s me, it’s Britney [Spears], it’s Halle [Berry], Mary [J. Blige] is allegedly. I was very, very angry about that. But it was because we had an existing prenup and post-nup. I wanted to renege; I’m going to be honest.”

The “Breath Again” singer also remembered feeling ambivalent about the whole thing, because if the tables were turned Lewis would be expected to take care of her, so at times she was partially okay with the legal arrangement.

But on the other hand, Braxton felt Lewis could’ve turned down the assistance and perhaps been more prideful.

“I thought he should say no,” she explained. “Even though if it were reversed we would expect him to make sure the lady was okay, so I can’t really bitch about it too much.”

“That was a tough pill. I was angry about that,” Braxton added. “I went through this whole phase, ‘Ooo men are the new bitches.’ That’s how I felt. That’s what I was so angry about. I was like I have to get out the bed so I can pay this debt.”
