Comedian Kevin Hart and his wife Eniko Hart received backlash after holding a “Cowboys and Indians” themed birthday party for baby Kenzo’s first birthday.
The couple celebrated their son’s birthday on Thanksgiving and shared a gallery of photos showing their guests and son dressed in Native American-inspired attire. Eniko, 34, took to Instagram on Thursday, November 22, to show pictures of baby Zo’s birthday bash.
“Zos cowboys & Indians party was nothing but amazing!” the new mother wrote on a group photo of her and Kevin’s loved ones donning in Native America-inspired tribal print blankets. The couple’s one-year-old son was dressed in a Western scarf, bandana, hat while sitting next to a teepee.
Several people slammed Kevin, 39 and Eniko for being culturally insensitive to Native American culture and many viewed the party’s theme as cultural appropriation.
One person wrote, “Cowboys and Indians? Can you not afford a publicist who would explain the reality [of] such a terrible idea?”
“Did Kevin and Eniko really throw their 1-year-old a ‘Cowboys and Indians’ themed party… These celebrities really love their privilege to be socially ignorant,” another added.
One Instagram user said the couple were, “Obviously not thinking. … I guess if you have money it’s alright to be stupid and insensitive.”
Others, on the other hand, jumped to Kevin and Eniko’s defense and said folks were being too sensitive.
“Its a theme, people been doing it for years , now all of a sudden ya’ll gotta say something about it, stay tf off of social media if you have a problem with it,” one user commented.
Another chimed in, “I’m shocked at how people jump at an opportunity to call people insensitive. This is a child’s birthday. Get a grip. It’s adorable.”
Kevin and Eniko welcomed their adorable son Kenzo into the world in November 2017.
