Congresswoman Maxine Waters Blasts Trump, GOP for Calling Kavanaugh Protesters ‘Mob-like’Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on Tuesday dubbed President Donald Trump the “poster boy for a mob protester” after fueling claims that liberal, anti-Brett Kavanaugh protesters were angry and “mob-like.”
Waters, an outspoken critic of the president, called Trump and the GOP’s repeated warnings of alleged “mob rule” by the left “absolutely ridiculous” and accused conservatives of trying to change the definition of constitutionally-protected rights to assembly.
“This country was built on peaceful protest,” Waters told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes. “And those of us who were part a of the civil rights movement, who understood the power of protest taught by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and others know that we cannot allow Donald Trump and anyone else to take protests away from us and to deem it to be violent and to try and make us look like a mob.”
Waters lauded the efficacy of organized protests and noted how it has helped spark change not only in the civil rights movement, but the labor movement as well. Even today, Waters said concerned citizens take to the streets to protest peacefully, all the while Trump riles up his base with false claims of “mob-like” demonstrators.
“This president is the poster boy for what a mob protester looks like,” Waters said. “He’s the one who has been violent in his speech. He’s the one in his rallies have said things like this, ‘I’d like to punch him in the face.’”
At a different rally, Waters recalled the president saying he’d like to knock the “crap” and the “hell” out of a protester, and then vowed to pay the legal fees.
“That is violent talk,” the congresswoman said. “We don’t have that kind of talk that’s coming from the women who are protesting. As a matter of fact, this country is past due for the kind of protests that we have seen women do in the last few days.”
