Two years after Lauryn Hill made headlines for keeping fans waiting at an Atlanta concert, the ex-Fugees singer is back to her old ways on her latest North American tour.
Hill is currently traveling in support of “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 20th Anniversary Tour” and fans eager to catch a glimpse of the vocalist have been airing out their disappointment for having to wait so long for her to go on stage.
During a Wednesday, July 18 concert in Toronto, Canadaian music news website Exclaim reported the star showed up more than an hour late and only performed a 45-minute set following special guest Busta Rhymes. Several concertgoers said Hill spent most of the time onstage not on music but on scrutinizing her band and tech team as she sped through 10 songs from the 1998 LP, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” She closed her show by doing her viral cover of Drake’s “Nice For What,” which heavily samples her single “Ex-Factor.”
Fans who attended the Toronto show, as well as other recent shows in the U.S., had no qualms about airing out their grievances about Hill’s chronic tardiness online.
“So disappointed in Lauryn Hill. If it wasn’t for Busta, it would have been the worst concert ever!”
“First the sound guy should be fired! There was no balance. Couldn’t hear s**t cleanly. The Vocals need to be crisper and louder than the horns etc. Just embarrassing! Then to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this classic masterpiece — she shows up late and does 40 min… IF I am the tour manager I apologize publicly for the absolute and complete garbage we were fed last night. Shame!”
“Saw Lauryn Hill in Toronto last night. She was 90 minutes late, only performed for 45 minutes, and it really wasn’t that good. #laurynhill.”
“I asked the security guard if Lauryn Hill was actually going to show up at this concert that was ticketed for 6:30 p.m. She assured me she had already arrived. It’s 9:30 p.m. and we are still waiting. I’m tired. She better hurry up. Smh…”
Still, others wondered why fans who knew about Hill’s track record even bothered going to her show to begin with.
“2018 and people are still buying Lauryn Hill tickets expecting a good performance. *sigh*”
