A South Carolina woman is facing charges after authorities say she berated, then physically assaulted a teen boy in an effort to shoo him and his friends from a community pool over the weekend.
Stephanie Sebby-Strempel found herself in police custody on Monday following a June 24 incident where she was filmed accosting a group of Black teens, who she claimed “did not belong” at the pool and threatened to call 911 if they didn’t leave, station WCIV reported.
The video, which was shared on Facebook, shows Sebby-Strempel ordering the 15-year-old victim to leave before striking him several times, making the camera go down. Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office said the teen was one of several kids invited to the pool by a friend who lived in the Summerville community.
According to witnesses, the woman, who works as a skincare consultant for multi-level marketing firm Rodan & Fields, told the boys upon arriving that they didn’t belong there and that they have to leave. Investigators noted that the teens remained respectful, and started heading for the exit — only for Sebby-Strempel to follow and continue harassing them.
“You little punks …” the 38-year-old woman says in the video. Witnesses said they also heard the woman use racial slurs against the teens.
Video and images from the incident show the Sebby-Strempel strike one of the boys at least three times as he and friends try to leave the pool area. The sheriff’s department investigators said the attack was completely unprovoked, adding that not once did the victim retaliate to being hit, despite the woman’s repeated attempts to get a rise out of him.
“Sebby-Strempel is clearly the aggressor in the assault even going as far as to continue to assault the victim as he was walking away from her,” the incident report read.
Sebby–Strempel is now charged with third–degree assault and two counts of assaulting or wounding a law enforcement officer — the latter of which stemmed from the fact that she shoved a detective into the wall and bit another on the arm, drawing blood, when officers came to her home to arrest her on Monday, sheriff’s office spokesman Maj. Tony Phinney said.
Sebby-Strempel’s first bond hearing was scheduled for Tuesday.
