On Monday evening “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta” breakout star Tokyo Vanity shared distressing and devastating news with her fans.

The reality star took to Instagram to post a memorable video of her grandmother and wrote, “My sweet granny I’m so sick right now I love you so much and imy already you always text and call me and tell me how proud you are of me I’d kill for another one of them calls you was so happy to see me for Mother’s Day …. I ain’t gonna lie I’m taking this hard just pray for me .. rest in heaven granny.”

This past week’s episode on VH1, Vanity revealed that she suffered from childhood trauma. Judging by the rapper’s Instagram account, she was close to her grandmother who was clearly a prominent parental figure in her life and an aid in her healing. She posted a photo wearing her “Granny”‘s cross and promised “to never take it off”

Supportive fans have sent a lot of love Vanity’s way and one person wrote, “I am so sorry for your loss. My grandmother raised me and she is my number one girl. Sending my prayers with you and her spirit will.live through u.”

A second fan wrote, “Praying for you I’m so sorry for your loss stay strong love 💕.”

“My sincere condolences to you and your family, allow yourself to grieve so that you can heal. I pray that God comfort you and your family during this difficult time,” another person said.

Although Vanity is in deep mourning over her grandmother’s death, the star reminisced on the good times she had with her loved one.

“Miss you granny 😂 I promise it wasn’t me who poked alll them holes in yo drawls when we was little ! Im sure God will clear that up for me.”

Democracy needs journalism it can trust.

This election season, the stakes are higher than usual — and so is the pressure on newsrooms to soften their coverage, stay quiet, or just disappear. Independent reporting, the kind that answers to readers instead of advertisers or political pressure, matters more in a moment like this, not less.

For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed independent and reader-funded. We have no corporate owner and no shareholders telling us what to cover or how to cover it. That independence is also our biggest vulnerability: nothing protects it except readers choosing to fund it directly.

Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under in a moment like this, it's rarely the independent, reader-funded ones that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
