A Chicago teen is dead after paramedics mistakenly pronounced him dead at the scene of an early morning shooting, placing a white sheet over his body.
Eric Carey succumbed to his injuries Tuesday, nearly a day after he was critically wounded by gunfire that broke out at a party in Chicago’s University Village Neighborhood around 5 a.m. Monday, FOX32 Chicago reported. Carey, 17, had been shot several times in the head was believed to be the second victim of the deadly shooting, which also injured five others.
Thinking he was dead, Chicago Fire Department paramedics covered the teen with a white sheet. It wasn’t until 20 minutes later that officials realized he was still alive and attempted CPR before rushing him to a hospital, where he was listed in “very critical condition.”
It was witnesses on the scene that notified officers that Carey was in fact still alive, according to ABC 7.
“They saw motion, movement underneath the sheet,” First Deputy Superintendent Anthony Riccio told reporters on Monday. Officers who were present notified paramedics, “this man is still alive.”
Riccio said paramedics moved on to another teen who’d also been shot after thinking Carey was dead. Another woman, Shalonza E. McToy, 22, was also pronounced dead at the scene after suffering gunshot wounds to the head and chest, Fox News reported.
Carey was taken off life support around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Fire officials say they’re “trying piece everything together” to determine how the teen was mistaken for dead in the first place. Authorities said they believe the shooting might have been gang-related.
