Rickey Smiley Makes Good on Promise to Gift Alabama High School Graduate a Car

The Alabama teen who went viral for taking the bus to his graduation has received a huge gift from Rickey Smiley. Thanks to the radio host and a couple of famous pals, Corey Patrick will have a car to drive to and from work.

Patrick went viral Thursday, May 17 when a MAX transit driver posted a photo of the Tarrant High School graduate in his cap and gown after he got off the bus. Patrick had to wake up at 4:30 a.m. each morning to attend school.

The determination moved Smiley to get Tyrese and Mike Epps on board to give Patrick a brand-new Jeep. The graduate got the vehicle when he arrived at the 95.7 Jamz studios Friday, May 25.

“We’ve got people in place to help you get your driver’s license, we’ve got people in place to have you study for the test,” Smiley explains. “And we have a car for you.”

Patrick, who was thankful for the outpouring of support, said he plans to major in computer science. According to CBS 42, the teen has since earned a full-ride scholarship to Jacksonville University.

And the teen doesn’t just have a new car to get him to college. The GoFundMe he set up has surpassed its goal of $10,000 in just five days, raising nearly $20,000.

In response to Patrick’s new ride, many have been applauded the teen for committing to his education.

“I’m so proud of you Corey Patrick out of Alabama, you are an inspiration [to] many!!!!”

“God bless you Corey, all of America is rooting for you!”

“The perfect example of a young Black man with drive and ambition. I don’t even know you but I’m proud of you and excited to see what great thing’s you’ll do !! 💞👑”
